Why this obsession with nappies?

Lying in bed last night I was woken by a massive bang.  A picture I had rehung on Saturday fell on me.  My ear stung.  I couldn’t go back to sleep and I lay pondering – as you do, at 3am in the morning.

What is this nappy obsession?  I asked myself.  And I came to the conclusion that as bad as the waste is, it’s not about that.  It’s about the fact that the disposable nappy companies have made us think changing a baby is a chore, drudgery, something we should do as infrequently as possible (stays dry for longer is the promise.)

It’s a bit like when advertisers told us we didn’t want to be bothered to cook.  Then Jamie came along and made us remember that it should be fun.  What a crime it is to have access to all this wonderful range of products but think preparing something delicious to eat is a boring chore.

They do it all the time, advertisers.  Like they told us smoking made us feel calm and glamorous when actually it made us stressed and stink.

Actually changing baby should be fun.  And catching poos and pees gives you a good feeling that you pass on to your baby making the transition to pants at the optimum moment (around 18 months) more likely and more enjoyable.  I just wished I’d known about baby-led potty training.  I was robbed.  You don’t have to be.
