Engel and Disana pre-order service

Every Autumn, Nappy Ever After puts in orders for organic woollen clothing to Engel Natur and Disana. This year our ‘Wool Event’ at the shop is on Saturday 15 October from 4 to 5pm. Preorders are due by Tuesday 18 October.

At our instore event, you can see and touch samples of  Engel Natur and Disana clothing.

Disana's new 'Melange' range of knitwear – jumper and hat

We keep down the price by taking pre-orders and pre-payment. This way you get high-quality organic merino wool and silk clothing (for babies, children and adults) at about 50% of the cost you would pay normally in a shop. Looked after properly these clothes are an investment; they last for ages, and baby and children’s clothes can be passed on.

For those of you who have a fear of washing wool there’s one simple rule: wool must be washed and rinsed at a similar temperature or you shock it.   If you do this they remain as good as new. We will have samples to show you.

Disana's new 'Melange' knitwear range

We do this event because we want to give business to the companies that continue to make these truly magnificent products but also we want your babies to have the experience of wearing them. We can also order for children and adults.

In the past, customers have ordered natural wool/silk vests for babies, sleepsuits with feet (for babies who kick off the blankets), colourful sleeveless and long sleeve vests and leggings for kids as well as adults . From Disana, we have ordered many boiled wool baby jackets and overalls.  The knitted jumpers (311), leggings (332) and trousers (331) are just so gorgeous and practical too.

If you know what you want send us an email and we’ll let you know the prices (No price list as we can never predict what you want to order and there are sometimes differences in prices according to size).  If you decide to order pre-payment is required.

After the event, you have until 21 October to choose, make orders and pre-pay. Engel products usually arrive within 10 days.  Some Disana boiled wool items may not arrive until December as they are made to order.

Please let us know if you’re coming so we know how many people to expect. info@nappyeverafter.co.uk or call 020-7014 3006

PLEASE NOTE: Discounted prices are only available on pre-ordered items, not our usual stock lines. Prepayment is required. All orders are taken at the customer’s risk however we can advise on sizing. There are no returns or refunds on pre-ordered goods.

What is a Doula? by Eleanora Lawson

We are happy to have teamed up with Londonbased Pregnancy Massage Specialist, Doula and Baby Massage Instructor Eleonora Lawson who wrote the article below, explaining how having a Doula with you during labour can be beneficial for a positive birth experience.

Image

WHAT IS A DOULA?

More and more natural labour is at the centre of attention, not only for mamas who wish to be empowered during the beautiful journey of pregnancy and birth, but also from the media after the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, chose to give birth without the use of drugs. Congratulations Kate!

Nowadays there is increasing research-based evidence proving how beneficial support from a Doula or Child Birth Companion really is.

Doulas can provide continuous, quality one-to-one care that will guide you and your partner/family towards achieving a positive birth experience.

Birth companions are not medically trained, but are often knowledgeable about the NHS system and medical procedures, as well as experienced in attending births. Doulas can offer emotional and practical support in preparation to birth, during labour and in the early days into parenthood.

The biggest source of evidence-based healthcare in the world, The Cochrane Collaboration examined 23 research trials in 16 different countries, involving more than 15,000 women in different settings and circumstances. The study concluded:

“Continuous support in labour increased the chance of a spontaneous vaginal birth, had no harm, and women were more satisfied.”

“We conclude that all women should have continuous support during labour. Continuous support from a person who is present solely to provide support, is not a member of the woman’s social network, is experienced in providing labour support, and has at least a modest amount of training, appears to be most beneficial.”

http://summaries.cochrane.org/CD003766/continuous-support-for-women-during-childbirth

This continuous support is now more important than ever due to a shortage of midwives, coupled with an overloaded NHS system, where it is likely that the midwife assigned to you on the day has to look after numerous mamas. It is also possible that you will have different midwives looking after you at different times during your labour as they work in shifts.

Your Doula guarantees continuity of care so you will never feel alone. Likewise, your partner/or member of family can also be supported and take time to rest. The doula is not there to replace his/her role, rather to complement it with the experience of having attending many previous births.

From my personal, direct experience, and from talking to other colleagues, having a Doula present during the birth of your baby is the best guarantee you can have a positive birth experience.

I actually would like to dispel a (possible) myth here: the doula is not there to persuade you to give birth in any particular way, to labour without drugs or medical intervention at all costs! That is not what a doula does!

Sometimes medical interventions occur and, at other times, could be necessary or life saving.

We are there to support you emotionally and to help you make your decisions; whether it is going to be a natural labour or with medical assistance.

A doula can not only help you choose the right birth place for you, explore your birth wishes, help with active birth positions, breathing and relaxation techniques (to name just a few things) but can also help you to understand options, so you can make an informed choice. This has been shown to improve the birth experience. Additionally, your doula will make sure you are hydrated, fed, rested and comfortable, as well as taking care of other practicalities.

Ultimately your doula is there to help you prepare for the birth YOU want.

Our recent toilet training/EC chat

We had a toilet training and EC chat last Saturday afternoon in our Chalton St shop. Joy’s summed it up below!

Thanks to everyone who came and participated in the ec/toilet training discussion on Saturday. I was a bit nervous about how it would go with people who were doing EC, people who were about to potty train and people who had potty trained.

It turned out to be a great sharing of experiences and learning from each other. I talked about some of the Triple P strategies around preparing children for trying something challenging, clear communication, realistic expectations of ourselves as parents and of our children. The question of ‘do rewards work’ came up.

I’m going to do it again. It’s just about bringing people together so they can share experiences, gain knowledge from other parents and then use it to inform what feels right for them and their child. The main ethos is listen to your child and work with your child, gain their co-operation. I hope you all got as much out of it as I did!

Joyx

We’ll hold another of these sessions soon. We’re setting up new events and workshops all the time (Herbal Medecine workshop for mothers and mothers-to-be coming soon!) – see our new Events & Workshop section on our website.
